Little Village is a waterfront shopping and entertainment venue located in historic St Andrews.  A place where you can trade in the sun and sand for shade and serenity.  At Little Village you can find items from around the world and from local artists.  Much of our inventory comes from fair trade companies that pay above average wages to the craftsmen and give back to improving the living conditions of their communities.  That’s why we like to call it “feel good shopping” because chances are that what you are buying is having a positive impact on someone less fortunate.

      Description: Local Singer/Songwriter KRISTEN BARKULOO

At just 18, Kristen Barkuloo has a lot going on musically. Halfway to Tennessee, Kristen’s first album, was released during the summer of 2013. The first song that she recorded, “Sit on the Pier Alone,” was written when she was 15, and the remaining 10 songs on the album were written when she was 16. But even though Kristen is a young artist, her command of language and writing style proves that she is a natural lyricist and writes well beyond her years.

In February 2014, Kristen was added to the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) “Ones to Watch” list as a songwriter who is recognized by NSAI evaluators as a writer who is “on the rise.” Kristen got the attention of NSAI evaluators for her “unique and promising writing skills.”

Kristen was heavily involved during the production of Halfway to Tennessee. With vocals professionally recorded at Studio 812 in her hometown of Lynn Haven, Florida, and instrumentation recorded in Nashville, Tennessee, Kristen was an integral part of the entire process. Along with singing all lead vocals and even backgrounds on a handful of the songs, she worked closely with producer Calvin Gann during every phase of the process. From identifying which instruments to use in each song and assisting with mixing of the resulting tracks, to working with background vocalists for just the right sound, Kristen immersed herself in the entire process.

"I didn't have to create a sound for her. She already knew that. That was the uniqueness about Kristen Barkuloo. Kristen was very young and knew already what she wanted it to be. All I was was a vehicle to try and help her get what she wanted. That's a neat – a very neat thing to see happen in an artist that young." —Calvin Gann, Producer

Since the release of Halfway to Tennessee, Kristen has been busy promoting her music. After a successful CD release concert, she has been singing on stages in and around the northwest area of Florida, including festivals and venues around Panama City and the “Scenic 30A” area near Destin, Santa Rosa Beach, and Seaside, Florida. This popular destination along the panhandle of Florida is quickly becoming known as a hub for rising musicians, and offers many opportunities for singer/songwriters.

Along with live venues, Kristen has also had radio success. Her first radio interview and first official spin of Halfway to Tennessee (title track) was on 100,000 watt country radio station WPAP. Kristen has also had success internationally with radio airplay on dozens of independent radio stations. Kristen has enjoyed spins within the United States and around the world in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Holland, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, and Uruguay.

Kristen’s style of writing seems to “strike a chord” with a wide range of listeners, which may attribute her success with a larger age range than might be expected, and among both men and women. Her vocal style is unique, and her ballads are a blend of country and folk, with a hint of pop in some of her songs.

“It must be acknowledged that at 17, even having 11 originals to her name is a feat in itself. The album is mostly ballads plus a few midtempo numbers, with lyrics that are wise beyond her years. Barkuloo has a soft, warm voice that country fans will embrace.” —Nikki Hedrick, The Beachcomber Music Reviews

Kristen grew up on stage, spending more than twelve years in musical theater. She has worked with the FSU film department, and in 2010 also appeared in the feature film “Lifted” (starring Trace Adkins, Ruben Studdard), in which she was credited for writing and performing an original song titled "I'm Thinking of You."

Kristen has played the piano for years, and has always loved to write. But things suddenly changed when she was 15, when she picked up a guitar for the first time. All of the elements came together and she began songwriting.

Kristen is currently writing for her sophomore album. “I can’t wait to share these new songs with everyone. It is always my goal to grow as a musician, so I’m excited to get back in the studio and continue making music.”

Yoga Schedule

While we have enjoyed offering Yoga here at Little Village, due to unusual weather conditions, our outdoor setting and lack of participation we are suspending our weekly classes until further notice.
We will, however, schedule Yoga Meetups and special events in the future so so stay in touch with us on our website and facebook page.  We want to thank our instructors Paul Zipes and Judy Christian. We look forward to working with them again in the future
